Choosing a perfect projector for your home is challenging, but having a complete setup that takes full advantage of your projector is another major task. Depending on your budget, you can invest in having a dedicated sanctuary for movie screening or converting your living room to an entertainment area. Your options are limitless as long as you keep in mind the important factors that will impact your projector’s performance.

Media room versus home dedicated theater

Depending greatly on personal preference and budget, you can choose your garage, backyard, spare bedroom or living room to set up your home theater. Before you decide to spend a fortune on your dream of having a cinema experience in the comfort of your home, you should consider the following advantages and disadvantages of the two different projector setups.

Media room

- More socialization: allow guests to converse, eat, drink and watch shows at the same time

- More options for activities: easily transform your comfy living room to a home theater

- More affordable: no need to purchase fancy seating, accessories, or sound system

- Limited design and décor: need to consider the overall home décor and design themes

- Sound system: more difficult to contain loud sound without surrounding walls

Home dedicated theater

- Tailored equipment: serve the sole purpose of watching movies, sports games or playing video games

- Specialized system and room design: house more speakers, add acoustic panels, specialty carpet and other enhancing features without interfering your home interior designs

- Limited use: can’t use the space for other purposes aside from watching movies or playing video games

- Lack social experience: find it hard to overlook your family members in the kitchen or hold a conversation without interfering your fellow audience

Screen types

There are various screen types from different price points. Fixed screens often guarantee smooth and clear images with a relatively tighter tension, but they also are more expensive. High gain models that focus light back toward you are not recommended, as they can lead to hotspots of bright light in the center and bad image quality from side views.

Manual pull-down screens are more popular and ideal for low-budget and entry-level home theaters. They can be easily hung anywhere on the wall and save you tons of space as they are retractable. If your budget doesn’t allow additional screens, you can pick a wall in your room and create your own fixed-frame screen with matte white paint.

Display screen location

Finding a designated screen requires certain calculations to make sure that you get the right distance from the audience without compromising the image quality. The screen height should be one-third of the distance from display to the first seat in the media room and 24” to 36” above the floor. The optimum vertical viewing angle is from 15 to 20 degrees. Make sure not to mount the screen on the wall that receives direct light.

Projector location
A proper throw distance, the distance between the projector and the screen, is the deciding factor for your projector location. Greater distance also means larger screen. In fact, throw distances vary by manufacturers and models, so you should look up the exact throw distance of your projector before setting up your gear.

The ceiling or a wall is known to be the best place to mount a projector, as it can get ventilation on all sides. Projectors can build up heat easily.  It’s important to avoid overheating, as it can partially reduce your projector bulb life. Additionally, projectors should be placed in the center of the room without any objects in its path for best image quality and clear line of projection. The tip to mount your projector on the ceiling is to find the best spot on a table or near the floor to provide the correct distance for the desired size image and then use a pole to market that spot on the ceiling.

Sound system arrangement

Before installing any fancy sound system, it’s recommended to consider noise control regulations by your local government. Some projectors may have built-in speakers but these speakers only provide anemic sound reproduction that sounds like a tabletop radio or low-end mini-system. If you want a full home theater audio experience, these speakers certainly won’t cut it. Completing to a nice projected image, a great surround sound system should include a home theater receiver and multiple speakers.

If 5.1 surround system is your pick, you can place three speakers and a woofer towards the front of the room and the remaining two speakers can be placed behind the seats. With 7.1 system, the 6th and 7th speakers can be placed behind the audience and the rest should be arranged similarly to the 5.1 surround system.

With a tight budget, a sound bar below your screen can be your next best option. Alternatively, you can pair your video projector with an under-TV audio system which also keeps connection clutter to a minimum without having to run cables to the sound bar.

Theater seating

You can skip this section if you don’t plan to set up a full-blown home theater, but keep reading if you’re interested in finding what it takes to create your cinema experience. A number of elements should be considered when it comes to theater seating including the number of people, size, shape and color. You may also customize seats for kids or include additional accessories such as cup holders, swivel trays, power controls and inbuilt USB chargers.

To get a proper viewing distance, you can take the horizontal length of the screen and multiply it by 2 to get the minimum viewing distance and by 5 for the maximum viewing distance. The distance between viewers’ heads, side walls, back walls, and surround speakers should be at least 4 feet.

Creating a cinema screening experience may not be as simple as setting up a projector for your business presentation or lecture in school, but it’s nowhere near an impossible task. It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English.
